“YOU HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE” is a common refrain in the emails Walter Lewin receives daily from fans who have been enthralled by his world-famous video lectures about the wonders of physics. “I walk with a new spring in my step and I look at life through physics-colored eyes,” wrote one such fan. When Lewin’s lectures were made available online, he became an instant YouTube celebrity, and The New York Times declared, “Walter Lewin delivers his lectures with the panache of Julia Child bringing French cooking to amateurs and the zany theatricality of YouTube’s greatest hits.” For more than thirty years as a beloved professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lewin honed his singular craft of making physics not only accessible but truly fun, whether putting his head in the path of a wrecking ball, supercharging himself with three hundred thousand volts of electricity, or demonstrating why the sky is blue and why clouds are white. Now, as Carl Sagan did for astronomy and Brian Green did for cosmology, Lewin takes readers on a marvelous journey in For the Love of Physics, opening our eyes as never before to the amazing beauty and power with which physics can reveal the hidden workings of the world all around us. “I introduce people to their own world,” writes Lewin, “the world they live in and are familiar with but don’t approach like a physicist—yet.” Could it be true that we are shorter standing up than lying down? Why can we snorkel no deeper than about one foot below the surface? Why are the colors of a rainbow always in the same order, and would it be possible to put our hand out and touch one? Whether introducing why the air smells so fresh after a lightning storm, why we briefly lose (and gain) weight when we ride in an elevator, or what the big bang would have sounded like had anyone existed to hear it, Lewin never ceases to surprise and delight with the extraordinary ability of physics to answer even the most elusive questions. Recounting his own exciting discoveries as a pioneer in the field of X-ray astronomy—arriving at MIT right at the start of an astonishing revolution in astronomy—he also brings to life the power of physics to reach into the vastness of space and unveil exotic uncharted territories, from the marvels of a supernova explosion in the Large Magellanic Cloud to the unseeable depths of black holes. “For me,” Lewin writes, “physics is a way of seeing—the spectacular and the mundane, the immense and the minute—as a beautiful, thrillingly interwoven whole.” His wonderfully inventive and vivid ways of introducing us to the revelations of physics impart to us a new appreciation of the remarkable beauty and intricate harmonies of the forces that govern our lives.

Must-Know Betta Fish Facts For Every Betta Pet Owner

Aquarium lovers across countries dream of having a Betta fish as one of their tank pets. For sure, they have been totally enticed by its vibrant colors, dramatically patterned fins and interactive personality. Unique as this fish is, there are fun and important Betta fish facts anyone who wants to be a successful owner must know.

As history accounts, the breed of this fish originated in Cambodia which was formerly known as Siam. The latter was coined with the fish’ present name – Siamese Fighting Fish. Famed today as Betta Fish or Betta Splendens, it has reached the tanks of many Eastern and Western households which find joy in keeping them as pets.

It is easy to spot one in a tank. They charmingly swim in their long flowing fins which are usually in various shades of blue, red, purple and white. Males appear in longer fins and more vibrant shade of their usual colors. Females wear stripes in their bodies and fins when healthy. When given proper Betta fish care, they are expected to grow up to two to three inches.

Another of the Betta fish facts that interests most owners is that each fish can develop its individual personality. Generally, males fight against each other for territorial rea-sons. Thus, it is best not to keep them together. Males and females, on the other hand, exude different characteristics. Some somersault above the water to catch food while some could be tamed enough for you to touch. Gifted owners even find them highly trainable to do small tricks like jumping through hoops.

Swimming charmingly is one way these fish show that they are healthy and happy. You would know if they are unwell if they move quite slowly, plus the gloom in their color. Basics on how to care for a Betta fish can help you prevent such health issues in your pet.

Generally, Betta fish tanks should include enough surface space. This provides your fish a perfect place to inhale air. They cannot breathe in the water so they stick out their heads from the water to breathe. Although they swim in water, they can drown in it.

The perfect tank for single fish is the one that can hold at least five to ten gallons of water. This is more than the fact that it finds joy in whirling through a wide space. Males, for one, need a clean and generous supply of water for building bubble nests for the coming of its babies. If you are keen to observe, you’ll notice a male Betta staying in one corner, gulping air and producing bubbles covered with his spit. This ensures him the bubble is sturdy until egg hatching.

The average lifespan of these fish is two to three years. Surprisingly, surveyed Betta fish facts say that under excellent conditions they can live up to nine years. With excel-lent condition it means sufficient supply of clean water and opportunity to exercise on a daily basis. While those sold in pet shops have already lived half a year or so, with proper care they can still live longer.

''You are what you think'': American self-help and the myth of unlimited human potential.

$49.99

"You are what you think" is a popular self-help philosophy, outlined in books written by Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Shakti Gawain, and others. In a mutable, responsive, quantum universe, the energetic vibrations of thoughts and feelings determine one's life circumstances. Wealth, love, happiness, health, even physical immortality can be obtained by anyone who understands the "Law of Attraction"---that positive vibrations reliably generate positive results. These claims are presented as literal truth, buttressed by developments in modern physics and the insights of Eastern spiritual practitioners. But "you are what you think" is best understood as a myth, a contemporary manifestation of archetypal patterns. I call this self-help philosophy "the myth of unlimited human potential.";In this study, I undertake an archetypal analysis of the central images or ideas in the myth of unlimited human potential as it appears in bestselling self-help books. For example, "energy" and "abundance," the "higher self," and the prescribed "evolution" to a "higher consciousness" in the myth are powerful variations of the archetypal Hero, the Child, and Paradise, the lost state of blissful innocence and security. These come together in the image of the "unlimited," a free, expansive human being in an infinite cosmos, capable of endless transformation, that is the heart of the myth. The image of the unlimited, as New World, frontier, and the Land of Opportunity for the self-made man, is also an essential component of the American Dream.;The myth of unlimited human potential is relentlessly optimistic about the natural goodness and creative role that individuals play in the world, and this dogmatism creates an unacknowledged shadow. The mythic or archetypal perspective opens up this fundamentalist philosophy of optimism to reveal the psychological fantasies of power, divinity, immortality, and innocence that fuel the myth, along with their less desirable and difficult aspects.
